About San Jose State University

San Jose University, commonly known as San Jose State or simply SJSU, is a public university located in San Jose, which is the 3rd largest city in the US state of California, as well as the 10th largest city in USA. The city was founded in November, 1777, as ‘’ El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe’’, and when California gained statehood in 1850, it became its 1st capital.

San Jose State was established in 1857, under the name of Minns’ Evening Normal School in San Francisco, and it was founded by George W. Minns. The institution had its name changed several times over the years, until 1974, when the California legislature voted the changing of the school’s name into San Jose State University, the name by which the institution is currently known.

Since it was founded, SJSU grew, having today an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 30 000 students, offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 130 different fields of study. San Jose State is known as one of the most ethnically diverse universities in the nation, having large Latin and Asian enrollments, including the highest enrollment of foreign students of all master’s institutions in USA.

The athletic teams from SJSU are known as the San Jose State Spartans, who participate in the NCAA’s Division I Western Athletic Conference (WAC), in various sports, including golf, swimming, baseball, gymnastics and several others. Over the years, the Spartans have won NCAA titles in golf, track and field, as well as boxing, and since 2008, the teams have won 10 NCAA team championships and 50 NCAA Division I individual championships.

The list of notable SJSU alumni contains names such as Bettina Aptheker - author, professor, political activist, John Maupin - President, Morehouse School of Medicine, Mary Blair - artist and illustrator who helped create Disney’s ‘’Cinderella’’ (1950), ‘’Alice in Wonderland’’ (1951) and ‘’Peter Pan’’, Charles Gingold — former vice president, Discovery Channel, James T. Beall Jr. - California Assemblyman, 24th district, and former Santa Clara County Supervisor, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
